You're looking for a new laptop bag. The vegan leather option looks great – but one question keeps coming back: will it actually hold up?
It's the right question. And it deserves a real answer – not lab results or marketing claims, but years of actual daily use.
At Plant Inside, we've been using our own products every day for over four years. Here's what happened – and what didn't.
How durable is vegan leather?
High-quality vegan leather made from plant-based materials like Viridis® (corn and wheat) or Vegea® (grape pomace) lasts at least 4–5 years of daily use – without cracking, peeling or losing shape. The key factors are material quality, construction and care. Cheap synthetic PU, by contrast, can begin to fail within 1–2 years.
If you want to understand what's actually inside vegan leather materials, what vegan leather really is and how different materials compare covers all the details.
What determines vegan leather durability?
Not all vegan leather is the same – and that's the most important sentence in this article.
Material is the deciding factor

Construction matters as much as material
A high-quality material in poor construction won't last. At Plant Inside, all products are handcrafted in local workshops in Poland – meaning tight quality control, no mass production, and direct feedback loops between craftspeople and design. Why that makes a real difference for longevity: why we still produce our bags in Europe.
Real-Life Test #1 – Laptop Bag Camel Nubuck (4+ Years Daily Use)
This is our most compelling test. The first prototype of a laptop bag in Viridis® Camel Nubuck – corn-based, handcrafted in Poland – has been used almost every day for over four years.
Conditions were far from gentle:
- daily commuting
- travel with hand luggage
- meetings and full workdays
- carried both by hand and in backpacks
What happened after 4 years?
- No cracks, no peeling
- Shape fully maintained
- Material softened slightly – but structurally intact
- Occasional marks from denim contact
The cleaning test – documented live:
Nubuck picks up dirt more easily than matt surfaces. But cleaning is simpler than expected: damp cloth, a little mild soap, leave for a moment.
The result: marks disappear completely. After drying, no stains, no cleaning traces. The nubuck looks new.

💡 Did you know?
According to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2017), clothing and accessories are worn an average of just 7–10 times before being discarded globally. A product used daily for 4+ years has a usage lifespan up to 20 times longer than average. (Source: A New Textiles Economy, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017)

Real-Life Test #2 – Crossbody Bag Black Matt (2+ Years Daily Use)
Two units of our first crossbody prototype in Viridis® Black Matt were used from day one by two different people – one of them a beach volleyball player, carrying the bag in very varied conditions.
After over two years of daily use, both bags were publicly presented at the Klimaty Design Market in Gdańsk (2025). The reaction from visitors was clear:
"This looks better than my real leather bag."
After 2 years:
- No structural damage
- No cracking at seams or edges
- Minimal signs of use – consistent with a lived-in aesthetic
- Zip and strap fully functional

Real-Life Test #3 – Lunch Bag Black (2+ Years + The Yoghurt Test)
A black Washpapa® lunch bag was given to a friend of the founder over two years ago. He used it daily – until the inevitable accident: yoghurt leaked inside.
He was afraid to wash it, worried the stain would stay permanently.
The answer: Washpapa® can simply be rinsed under running water. No special products, no soaking, no risk.
Result: stain gone completely. Lunch bag like new.
This isn't a marketing claim – it's the nature of the material. Washpapa® is made from cellulose fibres and synthetic latex and is fully water-resistant. More about this remarkable material: What Is Washpapa®? The Plant-Based Paper Textile from Germany.
Real-Life Test #4 – Laptop Sleeve (3+ Years, Different Use Styles)
Laptop sleeves made from Washpapa® and felt are used very differently across the Plant Inside team – from careful daily use to genuine stress tests in backpacks.
After 3 years:
- Primary function – protection: fully intact
- Magnetic closure: works perfectly
- Edges: may curl slightly with heavy backpack use – no impact on protective function
Honest assessment: handled with some care, the sleeve looks almost unchanged after years. Used intensively in a packed bag, you'll see edge wear – but your MacBook stays protected.
Real-Life Test #5 – Wallets Viridis® (4+ Years, Family Test)
Wallets are the hardest everyday test: opened constantly, carried in tight pockets, loaded with cards.
At Plant Inside, almost all family members and friends have been using prototype wallets for over four years.
After 4+ years:
- No stretching
- No deformation
- No cracking or peeling
- Stitching fully intact
The co-founder's son puts it simply: "This is our best product. Who carries a bulky wallet anymore?"

What holds up well – and what to know
What works very well ✅
- Viridis® and Vegea® show no cracking or peeling after 4 years
- Washpapa® is fully water-resistant and easy to clean
- All materials retain shape with daily use
- Stitching and closures remain stable with handcrafted quality
What to be aware of ⚠️
- Light nubuck finishes (e.g. camel) pick up dirt more easily than matt – but clean up simply with a damp cloth
- Laptop sleeve edges may curl with heavy backpack use – no impact on protection
- Budget PU materials without certification can fail within 1–2 years – not all vegan leather is equal
- Vegan leather is not biodegradable – including plant-based alternatives. Why that's still the right choice: why our products aren't biodegradable – and why that's the right decision
Vegan leather vs. real leather – which lasts longer?
A fair question with a nuanced answer.
High-quality natural leather can last 10–15 years under good conditions. But it requires regular conditioning, is vulnerable to water, costs significantly more to produce – and comes with well-known ethical consequences.
Viridis® after 4 years of daily use: no cracking, no conditioning products needed, wipe clean with a damp cloth. The full side-by-side comparison: vegan leather vs. real leather – honest comparison 2026.
FAQ
How long does vegan leather last?
High-quality plant-based materials like Viridis® last at least 4–5 years of daily use – confirmed by our own real-life tests. Budget PU alternatives can show cracking within 1–2 years.
What is the most durable vegan leather for laptop bags?
Based on our experience, Viridis® (corn + wheat, 69% bio-based) performs best: shape-stable, easy to clean, no peeling after 4+ years of daily use. It's the material behind all Plant Inside laptop bags.
Does vegan leather crack?
High-quality vegan leather does not crack – our multi-year tests confirm this. Cheap synthetic PU can become brittle and crack relatively quickly.
Can vegan leather be cleaned easily?
Yes – and more easily than real leather. Viridis® with a damp cloth and mild soap, Washpapa® even under running water. No specialist products needed.
Is vegan leather good for laptop bags?
Absolutely. Our Viridis® Camel Nubuck laptop bag has been used daily for over 4 years – reliably protecting the laptop and still looking good.
What's the difference between Viridis® nubuck and matt?
Nubuck has a softer, suede-like texture and picks up dirt more easily – but cleans up simply. Matt is smoother and lower maintenance. Both are equally durable.
How do I recognise high-quality vegan leather?
Look for certifications (OEKO-TEX Standard 100, USDA BioPreferred, FSC®), the share of bio-based raw materials, and country of production. Certified European material is a reliable indicator of quality.
Conclusion
The question "is vegan leather durable?" can't be answered in a single word – but for high-quality plant-based materials like Viridis® and Washpapa®, the answer is clearly: yes.
After four-plus years of daily use of our own products – no cracking, no shape loss, with the simplest possible care – we're convinced: the most sustainable product is the one you never need to replace.
