You want a bag that actually thinks ahead. One that protects your laptop, organises your day and looks like it was made for you – not for a catalogue. Vegan shopper bags are everywhere these days. But one that truly does it all? Rarer than you'd think. This guide walks you through what really matters – and why the choice means more than just picking a colour.
What Is a Vegan Shopper Bag?
A shopper bag is a large, structured everyday bag with a zip closure, long handles, and interior organisation – designed for full days, not quick errands.
Vegan means: no animal-derived materials. No leather, no suede, no wool, no animal-based adhesives. What replaces them varies widely – from petroleum-based synthetic leather to plant-based alternatives made from grape waste, corn, or pineapple fibres.
In short: A vegan shopper bag combines function and values – spacious enough for a working day, free from animal materials, and at its best, made from raw materials that leave a lighter footprint on the world.
The shopper bag is often confused with the tote bag – and at first glance, it's easy to see why. Both are large, both have long handles, both are built for everyday life. But underneath they're quite different products. Which format suits which situation is something we cover in detail in our article Shopper Bag or Tote Bag – What's the Difference?

5 Things That Actually Matter in a Vegan Shopper Bag
Not every bag that calls itself "vegan" is actually well made. Here are the five things worth checking before you buy.
1. Material – vegan doesn't always mean what you think
The biggest difference is invisible: it's in the material. PU synthetic leather on a petroleum base is vegan – but far from sustainable. Plant-based alternatives like Vegea® from wine production waste or Viridis® from European corn and wheat take a different approach: renewable raw materials, European production, no microplastic coating.
Look for specific material names and certifications – not just the word "vegan".
2. Structure – does the bag hold its shape?
A good shopper bag keeps its form. Not rigid like a suitcase – but stable enough to stand upright, protect your laptop and not collapse into a shapeless heap when empty. A quick test: put the bag on the floor with nothing inside. Does it stay standing?
3. Laptop compartment – dedicated or just "big enough"?
This is the detail most people miss. Many bags technically "fit" a laptop – in the same compartment as your water bottle, keys, and lunch box. A real dedicated laptop compartment is a separate chamber with its own zip. That protects the laptop – and finally makes the rest of your bag accessible. Just how rare this combination is becoming clear in our comparison of 7 vegan shopper bags for work.

4. Craftsmanship – what do the details tell you?
Look at the stitching: even, tight, no loose threads. Check the zips: do they run smoothly without catching? Look at the handles: are they made from the same material as the bag, or cheaper substitutes? And check the hardware: metal or plastic? Details reveal more about quality than any marketing copy.
5. Production – who actually made this bag?
Vegan materials in a bag produced under questionable conditions isn't a win. Ask: Where is it made? In which workshop? By whom? Transparent brands have answers to these questions – and show them openly.

Plant-Based Materials Compared – Vegea® vs. Viridis®
Both materials are plant-based, both are free from animal components and PVC – but they feel completely different.
Vegea® is made from wine production waste: grape skins, seeds and stems that would otherwise be discarded. The result is a soft, supple material that moves with the contents – draped, body-close, developing character with use. Certified to REACH, GOTS and the Global Recycled Standard.
Viridis® is made from European corn and wheat and contains up to 69% plant-based raw materials. It's firmer, more structured, holds its shape even when empty. Certified to Animal Free by LAV, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and FSC.
Which material suits you better – soft and draped or firm and structured – is covered in detail in our article Vegea® or Viridis® – which shopper bag is right for you?
How to Spot a Truly Good Vegan Shopper Bag – Checklist
Run through this before you buy:
- ☐ Is the material named specifically – with origin and certifications?
- ☐ Does the bag stand upright when empty?
- ☐ Is there a separate laptop compartment with its own zip?
- ☐ Do the zips run smoothly and evenly?
- ☐ Is the stitching even with no loose threads?
- ☐ Are the handles made from the same material as the bag?
- ☐ Is production transparent – with concrete information about the workshop and country?
- ☐ Is the brand honest about what their product can do – and what it can't?
If you can tick every box, you've found a bag that's worth its price.
The Plant Inside Vegan Shopper Bag – How It Came to Be and What It Does
The story behind the bag
The Plant Inside Shopper Bag wasn't designed at a desk. Kinga – the designer and its daily carrier – knew from the start exactly what she wanted: a large, honest everyday bag made from plant-based materials. No compromise between style and function.
The development happened in Malbork, in the workshop of Anna – a master leatherworker with over 20 years of experience. Kinga visited four or five times. Together they worked through every detail: Kinga brought the design vision, Anna the craft expertise. From that collaboration came two versions – one in Vegea®, one in Viridis® – because one material alone doesn't speak to every woman.
"We didn't want one bag for everyone. We wanted the right bag for you."

FAQ
Is a vegan shopper bag actually sustainable?
Not automatically. "Vegan" only means the absence of animal materials – it says nothing about environmental impact. What matters is the material used (petroleum-based PU vs. plant-based alternatives), where and how it's produced, and how long it lasts. A vegan bag made from plant-based materials that holds up for ten years is far more sustainable than a cheap alternative replaced every season.
How big should a shopper bag be for work?
For a full working day with a laptop, look for dimensions of at least around 40 × 30 × 12 cm. The Plant Inside Shopper Bag measures approx. 45 × 32 × 14 cm – enough for a 15" laptop, notebook, water bottle, lunch box and daily essentials.
Can I use a vegan shopper bag in the rain?
That depends on the material. Both Viridis® and Vegea® are water-resistant – light rain is no problem. In heavy rain, an additional water-repellent spray is a sensible precaution, as with any quality material. Neither requires specialist leather care products.
What's the difference between a shopper bag and a laptop bag?
A classic laptop bag is optimised for carrying a laptop – often at the expense of everyday versatility. A shopper bag with a dedicated laptop compartment combines both: laptop protection and daily organisation. For many women, the shopper bag is the more elegant alternative – with a silhouette that works with any outfit.
How do I care for a vegan shopper bag made from plant-based leather?
Both Viridis® and Vegea® are easy to maintain. For everyday cleaning, a slightly damp cloth is enough. For tougher marks, use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner – no solvents, no acetone. Neither material requires specialist leather conditioner.
Do vegan shopper bags with a laptop compartment come in other colours?
The Plant Inside Shopper Bag is currently available in Black Matt (Vegea®) and Dark Brown Nubuck (Viridis®). If you'd prefer a different colour – such as Black Matt in Viridis® or Camel Nubuck – feel free to get in touch. We produce individual pieces on request.
Is a high-quality vegan shopper bag really worth the investment?
Yes – if it's genuinely high quality. The key factor is longevity: a bag that lasts five to ten years costs significantly less per year than a fast fashion alternative replaced after one season. Plant-based materials like Viridis® and Vegea® aren't just animal-friendly – they're built to last.
