All travelling vegans and vegetarians know that it is a tough issue. Even though there are more and more people that reduce meat in their diet, most of the restaurants still work the same way as in the past. This is why it is so difficult to find some good vegan and vegetarian spots in the central place of touristic cities.
This is changing, however, which makes me super happy. My recent trip to Paris was one of the easiest when it came to food. Fortunately, there are plenty of vegan places in the French capital.
But let’s face it, big cities aren’t actually good examples, are they? These are the most developed places around the world. So where should green restaurants be than there?
When choosing some smaller destination, we have to be prepared by default for the lack of vegan spots. But there’s always a way. Here are our vegan travel tips that have worked for us.
1. Do some really good research
It’s the worst felling looking for a place to eat while being hungry, isn’t it? I know this felling too good and it usually doesn’t end well. For some time now, when I travel somewhere it’s one of my priority to check some good vegan spots.
I like to add the best one to my Google Map list, so in the case emergency there is always at least one. It’s much faster and if it has been recommended by locals it must be good. That’s why you should check at least few websites. If a place is recommended by more than one person, I usually decide to check it by myself then.
When you find some really good coffee place to do some work don’t forget to take our Vegan Macbook Case with you.
2. Always have a to-go snack with you
There are literally millions of snacks suitable for vegans. Dried fruits, sandwiches, and dark chocolate are only a few examples. Your imagination is your only limit.
I personally like to keep some dried dates, some sweet treats, and some vegan sandwiches in my backpack. This way I’m (almost) always prepared when my hunger comes. This is actually why we our stylish Lunch Bags.
3. Choose the accommodation suitable for vegans
It’s still relatively hard to receive some good vegan breakfast in hotels, isn’t it? Having a whole day of sightseeing in front you require a solid meal. And it’s just a nice feeling to have the first meal of the day prepared for you.
My tip for this issue is to call the hotel before placing the reservation. I personally call the reception to ask about the vegan options. This will help you avoid the disappointment during arrival.
4. Ask for recommendation
Fortunately, a vegan community is really helpful. This is why you should ask for recommendation on the regional groups on social media. Local people will definitely help you find the best spots and the best events.
5. Ready-to-use powders
I must say that this point creates some tension in our team. Some of us thinks about it as a really good, temporary solution. Another half of us don’t accept this kind of food.
The truth is that in a long-term it’s probably not the best idea. When you have a lot of time, we definitely recommend you cook by yourself. But having such meal from time to time is not such a bad idea. Especially when it can help you eat something nutritious during sightseeing.
Most of the ready-to-use powders are suitable for vegans, which makes them perfect for a long day. You can take with you the exact amount of powder you need and in the required moment just mix it with water. It’s very simple and comfortable solution. And nutritious as well. For me personally, a game-changer during sport competition and sightseeing.
6. To-go boxes
I’m a big fun of preparing food for the whole day. This way you are always prepared, and what’s even more important. You always know what is inside your food.
On the other hand, it takes some time to prepare it. And you don’t go on your vacations to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, do you?
But let’s say, you found a perfect vegan restaurant during your holiday. The food is delicious, but you didn’t plan to visit the given district the next day. Why not to take an additional portion to-go then? This way you will have a ready meal for the next day and you will save some time for another activities.
We live in a really good times for both vegans and vegetarians. There are a lot of food options for both, nearly everywhere. Sure, it can be challenging in some parts of the world. But there is a solution almost everywhere. So don’t worry anymore and just plan your next holiday.
