You've made the decision: a vegan laptop bag made from plant-based leather. Now comes the actually difficult question.
Matt or Nubuck?
Both surfaces are made from the same material – Viridis®, a vegan leather from European corn and wheat. Both are hand-sewn in the same workshops in Poland. Both withstand years of daily use.
And yet they are fundamentally different. Not in the material – but in character. In feel. In everyday life.
This article helps you understand which surface really suits you – not on paper, but in real life.
What Is the Difference Between Matt and Nubuck?
Before we get into everyday life, a quick look at what actually makes the difference.
Matt is the smooth variant. The Viridis® Matt surface is even, structured and consistent in colour. It reflects light uniformly and therefore looks calm and clean.
Nubuck is the velvety variant. The surface is treated so that fine fibres are raised – similar to suede, but with a different structure and feel. The result is a soft, slightly matte surface that feels distinctive – and looks subtly different depending on the light.
Both variants are water-resistant and can be cleaned with a damp cloth. The difference isn't in the function – it's in the personality.
What Is a Vegan Laptop Bag in Matt or Nubuck?
A vegan laptop bag in Matt or Nubuck is a bag made from plant-based Viridis® leather that offers either a smooth, uniform (Matt) or a velvety, characterful (Nubuck) feel depending on the surface treatment. Both variants reliably protect the laptop, are completely animal-free and are handcrafted in Poland.
Matt in Everyday Life: Calm, Consistent, Always Right
Imagine reaching for your bag every morning. No surprises. No marks you didn't notice yesterday. No question about whether it goes with your outfit today.
That's Matt.
The matt surface of Viridis® is what many people mean when they say: "I want a bag that just works." It isn't boring – it's reliable. And reliability is underrated.
Black Matt is the purest version of that. Deep, even, works with everything. In the office, in a meeting, at a café – Black Matt never puts a foot wrong. Anyone moving between different environments daily and not wanting to spend energy on outfit decisions reaches for Black Matt.
Brown Matt is warmer, earthier – and more alive. Because Viridis® in Brown Matt develops a natural patina over time. At edges and fold points the colour may lighten slightly. That's not a flaw – that's character. The bag tells its story without wearing out. Those who love natural tones and appreciate a material that lives with them choose Brown Matt.

When Matt is the right choice:
- you want minimal maintenance
- you carry the bag daily across different environments
- you prefer a product that stays completely consistent for years
- you work in a formal professional setting
Nubuck in Everyday Life: Living, Full of Character, Distinctive
Nubuck is different. You notice it immediately – at first touch.
The velvety surface has a depth that Matt doesn't have. It looks slightly different depending on the light. It feels softer. And it turns a laptop bag into something you can't immediately put in a box.
That's Nubuck.
Our first prototype of the vegan laptop bag in Camel Nubuck has been used every single day for over four years. What really happened during that time – and what didn't – is documented in our hands-on report: 4 Years of Daily Use: What Really Happens to a Vegan Laptop Bag].
Black Nubuck is for those who know and love the look of Black Matt – but want something more. The velvety surface makes the same professional impression, but with a texture that stands out without shouting. Compared directly with a smooth black bag, Black Nubuck looks richer, deeper, more handcrafted.

Brown Nubuck combines the best of two worlds: the warmth of Brown Matt and the feel of Nubuck. A light, natural brown with a velvety surface – for those who love natural tones and want a distinctive texture at the same time.
Camel Nubuck is the boldest choice in the collection. Not because it's loud – but because it requires trust. Sand. Sunlight on pale leather. Camel Nubuck is the colour you choose when you know the material holds up. After four years of daily use we can confirm it does – and what that looks like in detail is in our real-life test: How Durable Is Vegan Leather Really? Experiences After 2–4 Years of Daily Use.
When Nubuck is the right choice:
- you want a bag with a distinctive feel and character
- you appreciate materials that feel "alive"
- you're willing to clean the bag occasionally
- you're looking for something that sets itself clearly apart from conventional leather bags
The One Question That Decides Everything
Before we get to care, one honest question:
How much attention do you want to give your bag?
That's not a judgement. It's a question of lifestyle.
Anyone who leaves the house in the morning and comes back in the evening without having thought about the bag twice – Matt is for them. Anyone who occasionally takes a moment to pick up a damp cloth and feel the material while doing it – they'll love Nubuck.
The difference in maintenance is smaller than many people think. But it exists.
Care Honestly Explained: What Really Happens
Both surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. Both dry in around 15 minutes. Both look the same afterwards.
The difference: Nubuck shows dirt more quickly. Especially with lighter variants like Camel or Brown Nubuck. This is due to the open fibre structure of the surface – it picks up particles more easily than the smooth Matt variant.
That sounds like a problem. But it isn't – as long as you know how to handle it.
A damp cloth with mild soap. Gently rub. 15 minutes to dry. Done. The cleaned area is completely undetectable afterwards. We've tested this ourselves – after coffee stains, after rain, after markets. Always the same result.

Worth knowing:
The velvety surface of Nubuck is created through a special buffing treatment of the material surface, in which fine fibres are raised. In traditional animal-leather Nubuck, the outer side of the hide is used for this – with Viridis® Nubuck, the same look and feel is achieved entirely without animal components, through targeted treatment of the plant-based surface. FAQ
What is the main difference between Matt and Nubuck in vegan laptop bags?
Matt is smooth, even and shows marks less quickly. Nubuck is velvety, has a distinctive feel and develops more character over time. Both are made from the same Viridis® plant-based leather and are equally durable.
Is Nubuck harder to maintain than Matt?
Nubuck shows dirt more quickly – especially with lighter colours like Camel. But cleaning is just as simple: a damp cloth with mild soap, 15 minutes to dry. The cleaned area is completely undetectable afterwards.
Which colour is the lowest maintenance?
Black Matt. The dark, smooth surface shows neither dirt nor marks of use particularly quickly and can be cleaned with minimal effort.
Does Matt develop a patina too?
Brown Matt develops a natural patina over time – at edges and fold points the colour may lighten slightly. Black Matt stays consistently dark for years.
Is Camel Nubuck really suitable for everyday use?
Yes. Our first Camel Nubuck prototype has been used every single day for over four years – to the office, on trips, in the rain. The material doesn't deform, doesn't crack and can be cleaned easily when needed.
Which variant works better as a gift?
Black Matt is the safest choice – it suits every style and every setting. Anyone who knows the person well and knows they love natural tones or distinctive textures will be right with Brown Nubuck or Camel Nubuck.
Can a vegan Nubuck laptop bag be worn in the rain?
Yes. Viridis® is water-resistant – both surfaces, Matt and Nubuck. In normal rain conditions the material offers good protection. In extreme wet conditions we recommend an additional protective cover.
