What makes a good lunch bag – and why the material matters more than you think

You tell yourself every day you'll bring lunch from home.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

And when it does – the food ends up in a plastic bag, a sheet of foil, or a container that somehow always leaks.

There's a better way.

A good vegan lunch bag makes the difference between "I'll try" and "this is just my daily routine." Practical. Durable. No animal materials. No plastic lining inside.

This guide explains what really matters – and introduces the material that's redefining lunch bags.

What Is a Vegan Lunch Bag?

A vegan lunch bag is a reusable bag for meals and snacks made entirely without animal-derived materials. Instead of leather or synthetic coatings, plant-based alternatives or special textile materials are used. A high-quality vegan lunch bag is durable, easy to clean, free from harmful interior coatings, and cruelty-free certified.

What Makes a Good Vegan Lunch Bag?

Before looking at a specific model, it's worth understanding which qualities actually matter.

Material: Not Every Vegan Bag Is the Same

The biggest difference lies in the material. Many so-called "lunch bags" are lined with plastic film on the inside – which is water-resistant, but neither truly vegan-friendly nor particularly durable.

The main material types:

  • Plastic-lined interiors – affordable, but often contain softeners and are difficult to recycle
  • Insulated nylon or polyester – widely available, but synthetic and petroleum-based
  • Washpapa – a paper-based textile material produced in Europe, fully vegan, water-resistant and surprisingly durable

Functionality: What Should a Lunch Bag Do?

A good everyday lunch bag should:

  • hold a lunch box, a jar and snacks comfortably
  • be easy to open and close
  • fold flat when empty
  • be simple to clean – ideally under running water

Durability: The Real Sustainability Test

A lunch bag is only sustainable if it's actually used for a long time. How different materials perform over the years is something we know from everyday experience – more on that below.

Washpapa – The Material Behind the Plant Inside Lunch Bag

Washpapa is not an ordinary material. It looks like paper – and behaves like fabric.

Washpapa is a vegan textile material made from long cellulose fibres reinforced with synthetic latex. It contains no animal-derived components – the latex used is fully synthetic. The material is water-resistant, tear-resistant and surprisingly durable. When wet, Washpapa becomes soft and mouldable – once dry, it returns to its natural firmness. Washpapa carries the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification and FSC certification, and is produced in Europe.

What Makes Washpapa Special:

  • Water-resistant – liquids bead off the surface, the material does not absorb moisture
  • No interior coating – no plastic film, no harmful substances inside
  • Lightweight – the bag weighs almost nothing, even when full
  • Foldable – folds completely flat when empty
  • Mouldable when wet – when damp, Washpapa becomes soft and can be shaped or sewn. Once dry, it returns to its natural firmness – which is how the precise folds and edges of our lunch bags are created
  • Durable – lasts several years with normal daily use

At the Klimaty Design Market in Gdańsk, the most common reaction to our lunch bag was: "This is really made of paper?" – Yes, it is. But it holds up.

Washpapa® is naturally water-resistant – which is exactly why the bag needs no plastic lining inside. Why that makes all the difference is explained in the article Vegan Lunch Bag Without Plastic Inside.

Thanks to the cotton strap with snap buttons, the bag closes in two positions – fully packed or half full, both work perfectly.

Care: Simpler Than You Think

This is the most common question we get – and the answer usually surprises people:

Yoghurt spilled inside? No problem.

A colleague has been using his black lunch bag daily for over two years. Yoghurt leaked once – he thought the white stains were permanent. Then he rinsed it under running water. No trace left.

Care instructions:

  • Damp cloth for everyday cleaning
  • Rinse under running water for heavier stains
  • Do not machine wash
  • Do not dry in direct sunlight

Note: Washpapa does not carry food safety certification. We recommend always transporting meals in sealed containers.

Did You Know?

According to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, over 1 million tonnes of single-use packaging are generated globally each year from workplace meals alone. A reusable lunch bag used daily for three years replaces an average of over 700 single-use packages. (Source: Ellen MacArthur Foundation, The New Plastics Economy)

FAQ

What is Washpapa?

Washpapa is a paper-based textile material produced in Europe. It is made from long cellulose fibres reinforced with synthetic latex. It is water-resistant, tear-resistant, fully vegan and free from plastic coatings. Despite its paper-like appearance, it is surprisingly durable and can be rinsed under running water.

Is a Washpapa vegan lunch bag really waterproof?

Washpapa is water-resistant – liquids bead off the exterior surface. For the interior, we recommend using sealed containers for liquid foods, as the material is water-resistant but not fully waterproof.

How long does a Washpapa lunch bag last?

With normal daily use and simple care, the Plant Inside Lunch Bag lasts several years. In our everyday experience, we use models that have been in daily use for over two years – with no visible wear.

Does a normal lunch fit inside?

Yes. A round lunch box, a screw-top jar, snacks, cutlery and a slim bottle or thermos fit comfortably inside. Thanks to the adjustable closure, the bag adapts to its contents.

Which colours are available?

The Lunch Bag comes in five colours: Black, Brown, Navy Blue, Sahara and Pastel Plum.

Is the Lunch Bag PETA-certified?

Yes. All Plant Inside products are covered by the PETA-Approved Vegan certification. More in our article PETA-Approved Vegan: What the Certification Really Means.
