An honest guide – from material to size, from function to values

Your laptop costs several hundred euros. You protect it with a €12.99 sleeve from the supermarket.

No judgment. For a long time, that was the only option.

But things have changed. There are now real alternatives – ones that protect your device properly, without plastic, without animal leather, and without compromising on design.

This guide covers what actually matters when buying a vegan laptop sleeve. Not as a sales pitch – but as an honest resource you need before you make a decision.

What Makes a Good Laptop Sleeve?

Not all sleeves are equal. The market is full of products that look great on a product page – and disappoint on the first real day of use. Before we get to vegan alternatives, it's worth understanding what really counts.

Protection – but how, exactly?

A laptop sleeve needs to protect against two things: scratches and light impacts. Scratch protection comes from the inner lining – ideally a soft textile like felt, which cushions the delicate surface of your device. Impact protection comes from the padding and structural rigidity of the outer material.

One thing worth knowing upfront: a slim sleeve is not a replacement for a hard-shell case. It protects your device in everyday situations – not in a metre-high fall. If you're expecting maximum impact protection, that's important to understand before buying.

Materials – what's actually inside?

This is where things get interesting. Most affordable laptop sleeves are made from neoprene or standard polyurethane (PU) – in other words, plastic. Functional, but far from sustainable.

Higher-quality vegan alternatives use plant-based materials. Two of these are central to how we build our sleeves at Plant Inside:

Washpapa® is a vegan paper textile made from long cellulose fibres reinforced with synthetic latex. It looks like leather, has a structured feel, and is water-resistant, tear-resistant and surprisingly durable. Produced in Germany, certified with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and FSC®.

Felt as an inner lining is the natural complement: soft enough to prevent scratches, resilient enough to handle years of daily use.

Everything about Washpapa® – its composition, certifications and real-life performance – is covered in detail in our article What Is Washpapa® – The Plant-Based Paper Textile from Germany.

Size – 14" or 16"?

It sounds obvious, but it's one of the most common mistakes. Laptop sizes are measured diagonally – the number refers to the screen diagonal, not the physical footprint of the device. A MacBook Air 13" has a smaller chassis than a MacBook Pro 14", even though the difference sounds minimal.

Our rule of thumb: if your MacBook has a 13" or 14" display, go for the 14" sleeve. If you have a 15" or 16" device, choose the 16" version. When in doubt, go one size up – a sleeve with a little room is far better than one that's too tight.

Vegan Materials Compared – What You Should Know

Washpapa® – the plant-based paper textile

Washpapa® is the material we use for our laptop sleeves – and for good reason. It combines properties that rarely come together in a single material:

It's lightweight (our sleeve weighs ~149 g), foldable, water-resistant, and easy to clean with a damp cloth and mild soap when needed. No special products, no effort.

The Aged surface imitates leather in look and feel – without containing a single animal-derived material. Produced in Germany, certified with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and FSC®.

Felt as inner lining – why it's the right choice

Felt isn't a compromise – it's the logical decision. It protects against scratches effectively without adding weight. It absorbs light impacts. And it holds its shape, even after years of daily use.

We use it as the lining for the laptop compartment – exactly where your device goes every single day.

What you don't see in standard PU sleeves

Conventional PU sleeves seem affordable and functional. What you don't see on the product page: PU is a petroleum-based plastic. Its production generates CO₂ emissions, and at the end of its life it typically ends up as non-recyclable, non-compostable waste.

Did you know? The fashion industry produces around 92 million tonnes of textile waste per year – more than any industry except food and construction. A significant share of this comes from accessories and cases made from plastic materials, used for a few months and then discarded. A Washpapa® sleeve isn't a miracle solution – but it's a clear, considered alternative to that cycle.

Checklist – What a Vegan Laptop Sleeve Should Deliver

What defines a good vegan laptop sleeve: It protects your device from scratches and everyday impacts, uses animal-free materials without petroleum-based plastic, fits your laptop precisely, is easy to clean, light enough to carry daily – and is made to last years, not just one season.

In practice, that means:

  • Soft inner lining (felt or similar) – no hard plastic interior
  • Animal-free, certified outer material – Oeko-Tex, FSC® or equivalent
  • Correct size – matched to your device, with a small margin
  • Magnetic closure or solid zip – not cheap velcro that fails within weeks
  • Lightweight – under 200 g, otherwise the sleeve loses its advantage over a full bag
  • Easy to clean – no specialist products required
  • Transparent production – you should know where and how your sleeve is made

Plant Inside laptop sleeves come in five colours – for every style and every routine.

Slim Sleeve or Laptop Bag – Which One Is Right for You?

This is the question many people ask too late – after they've already bought.

When is a sleeve enough?

A laptop sleeve is the right choice when you:

  • follow the same daily route and only need the laptop plus a few documents
  • use it as a protective layer inside a larger bag or backpack
  • want to travel light and minimal – coworking sessions, short meetings, university
  • want something that looks clean and professional when placed on a desk

When do you need more?

A vegan laptop bag is the better option when you:

  • need to carry a charger, mouse, notebook and other accessories every day
  • commute longer distances or travel frequently
  • aren't using a backpack or tote bag alongside
  • want the bag to be your only piece of luggage

Many of our customers use both: the sleeve as their everyday companion – and the laptop bag for days that demand more. You can find a full breakdown in our Vegan Laptop Bag – The Ultimate Guide 2026.

How to Care for a Washpapa® Sleeve

Short and honest: it's easy.

Washpapa® is water-resistant and can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap whenever needed. No soaking, no specialist cleaner, no dryer. Wipe, air dry – done.

What to avoid: prolonged direct contact with water (the sleeve is water-resistant, not waterproof), harsh cleaning products, and strong mechanical pressure on the surface.

How Washpapa® holds up after years of daily use – including a real-life yoghurt test – is covered in our article How Durable Is Vegan Leather? Real-Life Tests After 2–4 Years.

FAQ

Is Washpapa® really water-resistant?

Yes – liquids bead off the surface without penetrating the material. It is not fully waterproof, however. Short rain showers or splashes are no problem. If the sleeve gets very wet, let it dry naturally.

Does a MacBook Air 13" fit in the 14" sleeve?

Yes. Since we don't offer a dedicated 13" size, the 14" sleeve is designed to fit MacBooks with a 13" display too. The slight extra room actually makes daily use easier – the sleeve opens and closes more smoothly.

Can I wash the sleeve?

Not in a washing machine. Washpapa® can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, which handles the vast majority of everyday marks without any issue.

What colours are available?

Our laptop sleeves come in five colours: Black, Chocolate, Navy Blue, Sahara and Pastel Plum – in both sizes (14" and 16").

Does it fit non-Apple laptops too?

Yes. The dimensions (35 × 25 cm for 14", 40 × 28 cm for 16") fit most common laptops including Surface, ThinkPad and Dell XPS. The key measurement is your device's screen diagonal.

Is it really handmade?

Yes – every sleeve is hand-sewn in small family-run workshops in Poland. More about our production and the people behind it in our article Handmade in Europe – Why We Still Produce in Poland.
