Picture this: it's Friday at 4:47 PM. You close your laptop. Your head is already somewhere else entirely.

Two days off. Maybe the coast, maybe old friends, maybe just somewhere nobody asks what you're working on.

One question remains: what do you bring – and what do you carry it in?

Choosing the right weekend bag sounds simple. It isn't. The difference between a bag that looks battered after its third trip and one that still looks great years later comes down to material, construction and a decision you only have to make once.

This guide walks you through what actually matters. And why vegan weekend bags are increasingly the smarter answer.

In a nutshell: A great vegan weekend bag does three things well: it holds enough for 2–3 days, it's made from durable plant-based materials, and it has a timeless design that works for years – without compromising on function or values.

1. What makes a great vegan weekend bag?

Not every travel bag is built for a weekend. And not every "vegan" bag is genuinely sustainable. These are the five criteria that actually count:

  • Smart sizing: A weekend doesn't need a trolley. 45–60 litres of space is enough for clothing, a toiletry bag and the essentials – without becoming a burden at the train station.
  • Material that lasts: Organic cotton canvas or plant-based leather for the details – no compromises on quality, no hidden plastics.
  • A clear storage system: One main compartment, one inner zip pocket, no labyrinthine pocket architecture. What goes in should come out easily.
  • Real carrying comfort: Wide, reinforced handles and a solid structure – especially when the bag gets heavier than planned.
  • Design without an expiry date: Weekend bags travel with you for years. A clean, timeless silhouette outlasts trends – and works with whatever you're wearing.

2. Why the material is the most important decision you'll make

What a bag is really made of doesn't show in the shop. It shows after two years of regular use. The material is the most important choice you make when buying.

Organic cotton canvas – the body of the bag

The Plant Inside Weekend Bag is made from heavy-duty canvas in 100% certified organic cotton (Oeko-Tex Standard 100). Canvas is breathable, structurally stable and surprisingly tough – even in rain or the luggage rack of a train.

The lining: soft organic cotton tartan in red, black and beige. Not just beautiful – practical too, because lighter tones make it easy to see exactly where everything is.

Viridis® – plant-based leather for the details

Handles, edges, logo patch: all crafted from Viridis® – plant-based leather made from corn and wheat. Viridis® contains up to 69% plant-based raw materials from European, non-GMO crops. The result is a material that looks and feels like leather – without harming a single animal and without the enormous resource footprint of the leather industry.

Every Plant Inside product is 100% vegan and cruelty-free – from material to packaging.

Vegan leather vs real leather – which actually lasts longer?

A fair question. The honest answer: it depends on the material, not the label. Our article vegan leather vs real leather compares both directly – with real test results from 4 years of daily use of our Viridis® products.

Short version: Viridis® shows no cracking, no colour change and no deformation after years of use. For more detail on care requirements and long-term behaviour, see our durability test how durable is vegan leather.

🌿 Good to know

The leather industry is responsible for approximately 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions from livestock – and is one of the most water-intensive industries on the planet. Producing a single leather bag requires on average more than 17,000 litres of water. Plant-based alternatives like Viridis® perform better across all key environmental categories according to an independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): lower impact on climate change, human health and natural resources.

3. Black, Navy Blue, Dark Brown – which colour is right for you?

The Plant Inside Weekend Bag comes in three versions. All share the same canvas body – the differences lie in character.

Version

Material Details

Character

Best for

Black Nubuck

Viridis® Nubuck, suede-like texture

Clean black, timeless and urban, no compromises

Anyone who wants one bag that works for everything – city, nature, work

Navy Blue Matt

Viridis® Matt, smooth finish

Deep navy, calm and confident; develops a natural patina on edges over time

Anyone who appreciates character and likes a product that gets better with age

Dark Brown Nubuck

Viridis® Nubuck, suede-like texture

Warm dark brown, grounded and timeless

Anyone who loves natural tones and wears their bag as a style statement

A note on Navy Blue Matt: the matte Viridis® leather can develop a natural patina on heavily used edges over time. This isn't a flaw – it's proof that the material lives and breathes. If you'd prefer to avoid this, go for Black or Dark Brown Nubuck.

4. What fits inside? – A weekend packing list

The Weekend Bag measures 53 × 30 × 22 cm and weighs around 1.2 kg. Big enough for a real weekend away – compact enough not to become a burden.

What fits in comfortably:

  • Clothing for 2–3 days (outfits, spare layers, workout gear)
  • Toiletry bag
  • Book, headphones, Kindle
  • Laptop (13–16 inch) if needed
  • Water bottle
  • A vegan crossbody bag for day trips – rolled up flat inside the main compartment
  • A vegan lunch bag for snacks or lunch on the go

What's better left at home:

  • The third "just in case" pair of shoes
  • Backup outfits that never get worn
  • Everything that creates stress – rushed packing, endless lists, unrealistic expectations

The inner zip pocket (approx. 20 cm) is perfect for keys, documents or your phone – always within reach, never lost.

5. Handmade in Europe – why origin matters

Every Plant Inside Weekend Bag is hand-sewn in a small workshop in Nowy Sącz, Poland. Short supply chains, fair wages, full transparency across the production process.

This isn't a marketing story. It's a decision we made from day one – and it shows in every stitch.

6. How do I care for a vegan weekend bag?

Canvas and Viridis® are both surprisingly easy to maintain – but a few basics go a long way toward keeping the bag looking great for years.

  • Canvas: Dab dirt away with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap. Do not machine wash.
  • Viridis® (Matt & Nubuck): Wipe down with a damp cloth. Stains almost always disappear completely once the material dries – it effectively cleans itself.
  • Storage: Keep in a dry place, ideally stuffed lightly so the bag holds its shape.

7. FAQ – Vegan weekend bags, answered

Is a vegan weekend bag genuinely durable?

Yes – if the material is right. Viridis® is not cheap PU faux leather. It's a bio-based material with up to 69% plant-based raw materials. Our prototypes have been used daily for over 4 years and show no cracking, deformation or colour loss.

Does the Weekend Bag fit as cabin luggage?

The bag measures 53 × 30 × 22 cm. Most European airlines allow cabin bags up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm. We recommend checking your airline's specific baggage policy before you travel – low-cost carriers often set tighter limits.

Which finish is easier to maintain – Nubuck or Matt?

Both are easy to care for. Nubuck (Black and Dark Brown) has a suede-like surface that hides minor scratches well. Matt (Navy Blue) has a smoother finish and can develop a natural patina on high-wear edges. For the lowest-maintenance option: Black or Dark Brown Nubuck.

What is Viridis® and why is it better than standard faux leather?

Viridis® contains up to 69% plant-based raw materials from European corn and wheat – no petroleum, no animals. Unlike standard PU leather, it carries multiple certifications (Oeko-Tex Standard 100, FSC®, USDA BioPreferred) and demonstrates a significantly lower environmental impact across all key categories according to an independent LCA report.

Where is the bag made?

In Nowy Sącz, Poland – hand-sewn by experienced craftspeople. All materials are sourced within the EU.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. All Plant Inside products come with a 1-year warranty. We stand behind the quality of our bags – not because we have to, but because we know they hold up.

Can I use the bag as a gym bag?

The Weekend Bag isn't a dedicated gym bag – but it comfortably fits workout clothes, shoes and a wash bag. It's the perfect companion for weekends that include a morning run or a yoga session.
